We get up to speed with our very own semi-professional rally driver and find out what’s attracted him to DATS, not once, but twice throughout his career.
David, tell us about your role at DATS CAD Services
I’m General Manager and manage the day-to-day running of our CAD division, including business development and design workload planning.
This isn’t your first time at DATS, is it?
No, I worked with DATS for four years previously and left in 2003.
Since then I’ve I have worked in Germany for 12 years, firstly for a market leader in Aircraft Ground Support Equipment (GSE), where I was instrumental in developing, building and managing their global supply chain for aircraft tooling. And secondly, I worked for a major American aerospace space systems integrator, who has just built the fourth final assembly line in Hamburg for the Airbus A320 family of aircraft. Whilst there, I managed their European supply chain, procurement and all the manufacturing activities.
What brought you back?
At the time of applying, the company’s CAD division was going through a period of change. I recognised an opportunity to bring some of my experiences into DATS and to drive the CAD division forward. DATS is a great company with a family feel and lots of ambition, and I thought that this was the perfect time to re-join and to become an important part of the Senior Management team. It’s a company that’s really growing and going places and it’s exciting to be part of it.
What do you enjoy most about the tech/design industry?
I’ve been in design related industries for 15 years and what I enjoy about it is the variety of work and the challenges it brings. Also, the people who work in this industry are incredibly talented and enthusiastic about their work. They’re also committed to a constant culture of learning. So, for anyone considering a career in technical design, you’ll get to work with a wide range of talented and like-minded individuals and work with the shared goal of making a difference through design. I’d highly recommend it.
And tell us a bit about yourself and what you get up to outside of the office
I’m into both cycling and rallying and was sponsored by mountain bike company, Muddy Fox, to race in the National Downhill Mountain Bike Championship for 12 months. I later moved to Kona Mountain bikes for two years.
I’ve also reached a good level in rallying, racing classic Minis and Peugeot 205GTis semi-professionally, competing in the RAC rally and the UK National Championships.
I also love travelling. I’ve been lucky enough to go to some lovely places, including Mauritius, Cuba, South Africa and New Zealand. It’s difficult to choose a favourite out of those.
