Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the practice of managing construction design projects using collaborative and coordinated digital modelling processes. BIM brings all of the Architectural, Engineering and Construction elements of a building together in one place, allowing users to incorporate different features more effectively. It promotes the synergy of information and modelling, standards and practice. In practical terms, BIM allows for more streamlined building design projects, reducing the risk of mistakes and budget overspills.
To indicate how fully a construction project has integrated BIM into its working practices, compliance is defined in progressive stages, from Level 0 to Level 3. BSI outlines the levels as below:

Permission to reproduce extracts from British Standards is granted by BSI. British Standards can be obtained in PDF or hard copy formats from the BSI online shop: www.bsigroup.com/Shop or by contacting BSI Customer Services for hardcopies only: Tel: +44 (0)20 8996 9001, Email: email@example.com.
The UK Government has pushed for the adoption of Level 2 BIM Maturity on all public sector projects by 2016. If achieved, this will mark a leap forward in how engineers and technicians collaborate nationwide. Design information managed via a shared, federated file format combined with automated connectivity will allow the Architectural, Engineering and Construction industries to forge ahead with greater focus and efficiency than ever before.
DATS can provide a range of BIM Level 2 services, from full 3D coordinated projects to BIM ready object creation.
